Today we...

Language Arts:

  • 1st Period:
    • Finished reading Priscilla and the Wimps and discussed the literal and figurative meanings throughout the story.
  • 2nd Period:
    • Finished reading Priscilla and the Wimps. Discussed the meaning of a gang during the 1950's (the setting of our story) and gangs today.

Math:
  • 1st Period:
    • Students finished Order of Operations test
    • Students started Variables and Expressions.
  • 2nd Period:
    • Students took their Order of Operations assessment.

Science:
  • 5th and 6th: Measurement Assessment 

Social Studies:

    • Finished comparing and contrasting North Carolina to Ecuador.

Today we...
Language Arts:

  • Students continued learning techniques to use before they read a story. This will help increase comprehension. 
  • We discussed our new story, "Priscilla and the Wimps".
  • Students were introduced to their vocabulary and completed a "Vocabulary Rating Chart." This chart indicated if they had any prior knowledge about each word.
  • Students will revisit their chart after we read the story and complete vocabulary activities and rate their level of knowledge again.

  • However, during Quiet Day, students were pre-assessed on Drawing Conclusions and Making Inferences.

  • 1st Period: Students were assessed on Powers and Exponents
  • 2nd Period: Students played Exponent Dice
Science:
  • 5th Period: Students continued working on measuring mass in grams using the Triple Beam Balance.
  • 6th Period: Students participated in the 7-Station Measurement Lab (see description from yesterday's entry).
Social Studies:
  • There was no S.S. due to Quiet Day.

  • Students reviewed the plot of "The Three Little Pigs: The Wolf's Side".
  • Students began our next literature selection, "Priscilla and the Wimps".
  • "Before Reading" strategies were discussed such as:

  • 1st Period:
    • Evaluating Powers with Variables
  • 2nd Period:
    • Finding the Value of Exponential Powers

    • Students used their Process Skills during a 7-Station lab. Students:
      • Measured length and width using centimeters
      • Measured Volume using Graduated Cylinders using milliliters
      • Classified Groups of Objects
      • Observed Candy using the 5 Senses
      • Interpreted Data of bean plants
  • 6th Period:
    • Students went over the Process Skills Vocabulary
    • They will do the 7-Station Lab tomorrow!!

Today we...

Math:
  • 1st Period: Students took a math assessment on Prime Factorization.
  • 2nd Period: Students worked on Prime Factorization problem solving in preparation for tomorrow's test!!!
Language Arts:
  • Students reviewed the 8 elements of short stories.
  • We discussed plot and it's 6 parts.
  • We read a common short story, The Three Little Pigs, and went through the steps of determining the 6 parts of the plot.
Social Studies:
  • 5th Period students continued with their math assessment due to the fact that pictures were taken during 1st period.
  • 6th Period: Students started working on their Balloon Globe project.
Science:
  • Students continued their discussion of scientific stereotypes.
  • Students continued drawing their "Scientist Self-Portrait" in their Interactive Notebook.

Homework:

Math:
  • Finish Pizazz worksheet on Prime and Composite numbers.
Language Arts:
  • Reading Log (DUE TOMORROW!!)
  • Students were given a Scholastic book order form. If you would like to order books, the order form and money are due October 5th.

Tuesday Brought With It...

Classroom Lesson/Activities:

Math-
  • Students are working on Prime Factorization.
  • Students in 1st period started a program called "Accelerated Math". There first assignment is due tomorrow and their second assignment is due Friday.
  • Students in 2nd period Math will start bringing home their Accelerated Math next week. Right now, they are working on it in class.
  • "Acclerated Math" activities will be part of the homework grades!!!

Language Arts-
  • Students are learning the 8 Elements to a short story.
  • Students created a foldable called the "shark" (some call it the "octopus"). This is an interactive, visual, and kinesthetic way to take notes and learn vocabulary words.
  • Foldable are kept in the L.A. binder in a page protector and are brought home when students need to study for a test.
  • Students also listened to a rap about the Elements of a Short Story. Click on the following link to hear it:

Social Studies-
  • Students are finished a test on Continents, Oceans and Hemispheres.
  • Tomorrow, students will begin exploring the 5 Themes of Geography.
Science-
  • Students have begun making their own Science book (Interactive Notebook). I will send home information about this process and it's benefits!
  • Students are discussing the following:
    • What is Science?
    • What is a Scientist?
    • What are the stereotypes of a typical scientists?
    • Where do scientists work?
    • What types of jobs do scientists have?
  • Students will begin an activity where they will draw themselves as a Scientist.

  • Worked on Divisibility Problem Solving.

  • Constructed a circle graph (Continent Pie) based on the size of each continent.

Language Arts:
  • What is Reading? Students discussed their thoughts on the definition of reading.
  • Students completed a Comprehension Diagnostic Test.
Science:
  • Students are putting together their Interactive Notebooks!!

A Busy Start to the Week!!!

We hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and Labor Day holiday!!

Here is a list of today's events:

Math:
  • Problem Solving using Divisibility
Social Studies:
  • Students continued working on their continent circle graph
Language Arts:
  • Students completed a Self-Assessment Reading Inventory. This allowed the students to analyze their reading habits. We will use this activity to set goals for and choose good reading habits.
  • Reading Logs were returned from last week. Grading procedures were explained and expectations for this week were reviewed.

Science:
  • Students reviewed Lab Safety Rules.
  • Students observations (last week's homework) were reviewed and discussed.
  • 5th period began putting together their Interactive Notebook.
  • 6th period finished the Spongebob Safety Rules booklet.

Homework:

    • 1st: Complete Powerpoint slide handout
    • 2nd: Student for test using math notes and handouts

T.G.I.F.!!

It is hard to believe the first full week of 6th grade has concluded!!!

Students had a good day today. Here are some of the activities in which they participated:
  • Students went to the school library. They were given the rules/expectations. They were also able to check out 2 books (1 if they have a book out from elementary school).
  • Officer Weymms visited 5th and 6th periods and did a Bully presentation for the students.

Wonderful Wednesday!!!

What We Did Today:

Math
  • Students reviewed Divisibility Rules.
Language Arts
  • Students continued a review of the different Genres of Literature.
Social Studies
  • Our school Guidance Counselor visited with the students during this time. She introduced herself and got to know each student. She also explained her role here at school.
Science
  • Students reviewed the Top 10 Laboratory Safety Rules.
  • Students took a quiz on these rules.
  • Students were shown the eye wash, fire extinguisher, goggle cabinet and fire blanket. Ask them about these pieces of safety equipment!!!!

Homework

Math:
  • 1st period: Write examples of Divisibility Rules for 5, 6, 9 and 10.
  • 2nd period: None
Social Studies:
  • None (both periods)
Language Arts:
  • 1st and 2nd periods: Reading Log
Science:
  • 5th and 6th periods: Go over the purple Lab Safety Form. Please sign and return this by Friday!
