Macaw December Updates

We apologize for the Blog being "under the weather". Below you will find the most recent assignments and "what's going on":

Progress Reports:
  • Progress Reports in Reading, Math, S.S., and Science will be sent home Monday, December 13th. Please look for these to come home.

Projects:
  • Students have 2 major projects they are working on. Please check both Mrs. Horne's and Mrs. Autry's websites for documents and dates!!!
    • Social Studies:
      • Students are required to complete "A Tour of Europe" project.
      • This project is due, in its entirety, January 12, 2011.
    • Science:
      • Students are required to complete a Science Fair project.
      • This project is due in it's entirety January 28, 2011.
      • Science Fair night at EFMS is January 31st. Students are not required to attend, but will receive extra credit for coming!!
Field Trip Reminder:
  • Don't forget: Students are going to the ACC Tournament in March.
  • Money ($10.00) for the ticket and transportation is due ASAP!!!!!
  • We will send home a reminder and FAQ's closer to the trip.

Language Arts Reminder:

  • Biography Reading Log:
    • Students should be finished with their Biography book 
    • Their log and questions were due Wednesday, 12/8/10.
    • If your child's questions were returned due to incomplete work or not following directions, they must redo them and turn them in Monday, 12/13!!!
    • Students who successfully completed their log and questions are now working on either their Biography Cube (2nd Period) or a Character Trait activity (1st period). These assignments are due on or before Thursday, 12/16.
    • If your child has not turned in their log OR questions, they must turn these in Monday (12/13). If these are not turned in, the highest grade your child can receive is a 30%!!!
    • Don't forget, this counts as a Project grade which equates to 2 test grades.
 General Reminder:
  • Winter Break is December 20-January 3, 2011.
  • We hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!

Wednesday!

Progress Reports:
  • Progress Reports in Reading, Math, S.S., and Science were sent home today in the Wednesday packet.
  • Please make sure you received all 4.
  • Reading and Science reports must be signed and any Math and/or S.S. report with an average below an 80%.
  • Many students have a low or lower grade due to incomplete or missing assignments. Please encourage your child to turn complete and turn in all assignments, as this can negatively effect their grades.
  • Students who are not pleased with their grades have plenty of time to change bad habits and bring the grade up!!
  • If your child has a low average due to low test or quiz grades, Mrs. Horne and Mrs. Autry are available after-school every Thursday from 2:10-4:00 (2:10-3:00-Math; 3:00-4:00-L.A.). Students may also need to increase their study time!
  • Thank you for all you do!

Quiet Day:
  • Students completed 3 assessments today during a 2-hour "Quiet Day" session. This is a great opportunity for students to be assessed on current goals and objectives. The following concepts were assessed:
    • Language Arts: Mood and Tone
    • Math: Word Problems
    • Social Studies: 5 Themes of Geography, Map Skills and South America

  • Biography Reading Log:
    • Students should be reading their book every night for 20 or more minutes.
    • They should write down the pages read and get a parent/guardian signature each night.
    • The log is due (11/12), 11/19, 12/3 and 12/8.
    • On 12/8, students should turn in the completed log as well as their answers to 10 questions about their famous/historical person. These answers should be written in complete sentences and either typed or written on a separate sheet of paper.
    • Students will then work on a "Character Traits" activity (1st period) or a "Biography Cube" (2nd period). These are due 12/15/10.
    • The log, questions and activity are worth a combined total of 100 points.
    • This counts as a Project grade which equates to 2 test grades.
Science:
    • Students are working on Ecology.
    • We are classifying animals based on their similarities.
    • We have discussed Scientific Classification and how scientists classify organisms.
    • We have learned that there are 5 categories for all organisms:
      • Animalia
      • Plant
      • Fungi
      • Protists (Micro-Organisms)
      • Bacteria (Micro-Organisms)
    • We are focused on the following:
      • Kingdom: Animalia
      • Phylum: Chordata
      • Sub-Phylum: Vertebrate
      • Classes: Amphibians, Mammals, Birds, Boney Fish, Reptile
Math:


Social Studies:
  • Students are studying the native people of South America (Incas, Mayas, etc.).
NO SCHOOL:
  • We are out of school Wednesday-Friday of next week!

Field Trip:
  • Students have the opportunity to attend the ACC Tournament in March.
  • Permission slips were sent home last Wednesday, and reminders today!!

    • I will have extra sheets available on Friday.
    • This work is due Monday, 11/15.
    • If these assignments are not turned in on the 15th, they will be graded as a "0".
Math:
  • 1st Period:
    • No Accelerated Math due this Friday.
    • There is a test Friday on GCF, Equivalent Fractions, Simplest Form and Improper Fractions/Mixed Numbers.
  • 2nd Period:
    • Accelerated Math IS due Friday!!!
Social Studies:
  • Students are studying the native people of South America (Incas, Mayas, etc.).

EOQ Testing:
  • This week, students will take the Reading and Mathematics End of Quarter assessments. The schedule is as follows:
    • Monday: Reading Comprehension
    • Tuesday: Math Calculator Active
    • Wednesday: Math Calculator Inactive
    • Thursday: Make-up Testing for absent students
  • Please make sure your child is at school every day and on time. Testing will begin around 7:40.
  • These testing sessions will be administered like the EOG assessments.
  • Please encourage your child to eat a good breakfast and do their best. THEY CAN DO IT!!
Homework:
  • Homework will vary due to a modified schedule.
  • There will be NO Reading Log this week.
  • There may be Science homework.This will depend on how much of the assignments students complete in class.
  • Please check your child's agenda for nightly assignments!!
"The Witches":
  • Students will watch this movie on Thursday. This is based on the book by Roald Dahl.
  • Students may bring snacks such as popcorn (already popped), pretzels, Sun Chips, or fruit (no candy, chocolate, chips, etc.). Students can also bring water or juice.
  • Thank you to all parents for signing the permission forms and sending them in!!

End of the Quarter:
  • Thursday is the end of 1st Quarter.
  • Students will receive their progress reports Monday (10/25).
  • Report cards will come home the 2nd week of November.
  • You will receive notification of your conference time on Monday, November 1st.

  • Students continued learning techniques to use before they read a story. This will help increase comprehension. 
  • We discussed our new story, "Priscilla and the Wimps".
  • Students were introduced to their vocabulary and completed a "Vocabulary Rating Chart." This chart indicated if they had any prior knowledge about each word.
  • Students will revisit their chart after we read the story and complete vocabulary activities and rate their level of knowledge again.

      • Students learned how to use a location's physical and human features to describe it.

      • Students continued making their spider web graphic organizer of the 5 Themes

Thursday

Today we...

Math:
  • 1st Period: Students took a math assessment on Prime Factorization.
  • 2nd Period: Students worked on Prime Factorization problem solving in preparation for tomorrow's test!!!
Language Arts:
  • Students reviewed the 8 elements of short stories.
  • We discussed plot and it's 6 parts.
  • We read a common short story, The Three Little Pigs, and went through the steps of determining the 6 parts of the plot.
Social Studies:
  • 5th Period students continued with their math assessment due to the fact that pictures were taken during 1st period.
  • 6th Period: Students started working on their Balloon Globe project.
Science:
  • Students continued their discussion of scientific stereotypes.
  • Students continued drawing their "Scientist Self-Portrait" in their Interactive Notebook.

Homework:

Math:
  • Finish Pizazz worksheet on Prime and Composite numbers.
Language Arts:
  • Reading Log (DUE TOMORROW!!)
  • Students were given a Scholastic book order form. If you would like to order books, the order form and money are due October 5th.
Science:
  • "I am a Scientist" Autobiographical sheet.
  • Some students may choose to work on their Scientist drawing. (This is optional.)
