Terrific Tuesday!!!

What We Did Today:
  • Language Arts:
    • Students explored and discussed the different types of music. Students listened to 8 different types. This activity led into an introduction of the Genres of Literature.
    • Students began a Vocabulary organizer with the different genres of literature we will study this year.

  • Math:
    • Students continued to explore the different math operations. A foldable was made to help students keep up with their information.

  • Social Studies:
    • Students began a discussion of the world and the specific continents.

  • Science:
    • Lab safety was discussed.
    • Students explored the 10 top lab safety rules. These rules were written into a graphic organizer.
    • Ask your child about Mr. Safety!!!!  :o)



Homework:
  • Language Arts:
    • Read for 20 minutes and log information.
  • Mathematics:
    • Students are to write word problems, WITH SOLUTIONS, for each math operation.
  • Science:
    • Choose AT LEAST 5 of the 10 Lab Safety Rules and draw a picture describing the rule.
  • Social Studies:
    • None

What We Did Today!!!

Math:
  • Students worked in groups to generate words, phrases and symbols that represent the 4 math operations.


Language Arts:
  • Students organized their binders.
  • The Reading Log expectations were discussed.

Science:
  • Students organized their binders.
  • Lab expectations were discussed.
  • Students worked in groups to complete the "What-Not-To-Do Lab" activity sheet.

Social Studies:
  • Students were introduced to Middle School social studies (via powerpoint presentation).

Homework:
  • L.A.:
    • Reading Log: Read for 20 minutes, write a reflection (no less than 4 sentences) and get it signed by parent/guardian (the entire log is due Friday).
  • Science:
    • Finish "What-Not-To-Do-Lab" worksheet (due tomorrow)
    • "All About Me" Cover (due tomorrow)
  • Math:
    • None
  • Social Studies:
    • None

T.G.I.F.!!!

It is hard to believe the 1st week of Middle School is over (well, a partial week)!!!! We had another great day on Team Macaw!!!

Today's Events:
  • All 6th grade students assembled in the gym for a grade level meeting. All teachers and administrators were introduced. Rules and expectations were reviewed. Team Macaw did great!!! All students were well behaved and attentive!!!
  • 6th grade had a practice Fire Drill today. Our team did great!!
  • Team Macaw had a team meeting. Students were praised for their behavior this week. Mrs. Horne and Mrs. Autry went over expectations and thanked all the students for their hard work. We hope this behavior continues!!!


Don't Forget:
  • Students need all their supplies on Monday.
  • Reading Log books must be shown to Mrs. Autry on Monday.
  • All forms are due on or before Wednesday!!!!


Weekend Homework:
  • Students are to create an "All About Me" notebook cover for Science. An instruction sheet was sent home today.
  • This cover is due Tuesday, 8/31.
  • Please review the EFMS Handbook with your child and sign acknowledging you have read over this document. Please return this sheet by Wednesday. (You do not have to return the entire Handbook. Please keep it at home for your records!!!)

2nd Day in Middle School!!!

Another Great Day!!!


Team Macaw had another great day in 6th grade!!! We are very proud of your students and their behavior!!! Here are some examples of positive behavior:
  • A teacher got hurt in the cafeteria. Our students were very well behaved when EMS arrived. They showed great concern and care for the injured teacher.
  • Students are showing great self-control and behavior in the hallways. They are quiet and orderly.





What We Did Today:
  • Students were given the EFMS Handbook. We will continue to go over this tomorrow.
  • The Raven Pledge was discussed (see below). Students began a foldable activity. This activity allows them to show, through pictures or words, what the pledge means to them.
  • Students were assigned locks and lockers. They did a great job opening their locks and organizing and placing items in their locker. We had 3 successful locker breaks today!!!











Homework:
  • Students need to return all forms (see yesterday's blog entry) and their Wednesday folder if they did not do so today.
  • Please send .50 with your child, for their lock, if they have not already turned it in.
  • Students who have not already chosen the book they will read for Language Arts homework, need to do so by Monday, 8/30/10.

1st Day in 6th Grade!!!!

Hello to all!!! Today was a great day!!! We were so glad to meet your child and get to know them. We look forward to learning more!!!







This week we will be focusing on Rules/Procedures and Multiple Intelligences.

This is what your child did today (8/25/10):

  • Your child was given their planner. They will write their homework in here daily. There may also be notes between teachers and you. Please look over this planner EVERY night and sign it!!
  • Every Wednesday, your child will bring home their "Wednesday Folder". They were given this today. This folder contains any correspondence from us or the office. The contents are listed on the front. Please sign this folder every Wednesday and make sure your child returns it on THURSDAY!!!
  • Every student did a "Getting to Know You" activity as well as a Multiple Intelligence survey. Ms. Horne and I will use these surveys as we plan our lessons. Ms. Horne will also integrate this survey into her math class by graphing the data of this activity.
  • Behavior expectations and the consequence chart were explained.
As you can see, it was a busy day all around!!!



What your child is bringing home (Information in Blue needs to be returned tomorrow!):
  • Wednesday Folder (please remove all contents, sign the folder and send back with your child)
  • Blue Emergency Contact/Pick-Up card (please fill out and return to Homeroom teacher)
  • Lime green Personal Information card (please fill out and return to Homeroom teacher)
  • School Lunch Form (return to Homeroom teacher IF NEEDED)
  • Behavior Contract (Consequence Chart on the back): Please read over this with your child and discuss. You and your child need to sign this and return it to the Homeroom teacher. We will make a copy for you and send home for your records.
  • Macaw Team Packet: Please read over this with your child. (You may keep this at home!!!)
  • Reading Log Information sheet: Please read over this with your child and begin to select a book.
Supplies: Many of you have asked about supplies. There is a suggested supply list in the Macaw packet. It is written in the order we would like the supplies organized.
  • Binders for L.A. and Math can be 1 1/2 inch.
  • Binders for S.S. and Science can be 1 inch.
  • Students need ALL supplies on Monday, 8/30/10!!!








Lockers:
  • We will begin issuing locks and lockers tomorrow (8/26/10)
  • Please send .50 with your child this week for their lock rental fee (some of them may have paid today)!!
Blog:
  • The blog will be updated daily.
  • Students and parents can check the blog for information.
  • If you write a comment, please remember it will be viewed by all!!

Welcome to Team Macaw!!!

Mrs. Horne and I are so excited about the upcoming school year!!! We were very excited about meeting all the students and parents who came to Orientation/Open House on Thursday!!!
